BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The University of Chicago volleyball team started the Illinois Wesleyan University Classic on a high note by knocking off No. 6-ranked Trinity University (Texas) and sweeping Texas Lutheran University on Friday.
The No. 19-ranked Maroons improved their season record to 14-2.
UChicago 3, Trinity 1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-21, 26-24)
For the second-straight match, UChicago was tasked with facing a highly-ranked opponent. Three days after taking No. 1-ranked Calvin College to five sets, the Maroons matched up with No. 6-ranked Trinity (Texas).
UChicago proved up to the challenge, improving to 3-1 this season against top-25 opposition. All four sets played out closely and were decided by an average of less than three points. The first two sets split, going in favor of the Maroons 25-22 and in favor of the Tigers 25-23. UChicago went up 2-1 after the third (25-21) and finished off a tight fourth set by a 26-24 margin.
Junior middle hitter Madison Pearson proved nearly unstoppable on offense. She smacked 16 kills on 24 attempts with no errors. Senior rightside hitter Sarah Muisenga hit .411 with 16 kills as well, to go with seven digs and four blocks. Junior outside hitter Anabella Pinton totaled 13 kills, and first-year middle hitter Audra Berg contributed 11 kills and four blocks.
Sophomore Emma Griffith set up the offense with 53 assists and also added 14 digs defensively. Sophomore libero Katherine Wilson posted 21 digs and six assists. All told, UChicago hit .291 as a team with eight service aces.
UChicago 3, Texas Lutheran 0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-14)
Later in the afternoon, the Maroons took on another team from Texas. UChicago started strong and improved on its winning margin in each subsequent set. They took the first set by four points, then seven points and 11 points to close out the three-set sweep. The Maroons never trailed at any point in the match.
The balanced offense was paced by junior outside hitter Anne Marie Stifter (nine kills), Pinton (eight kills), Muisenga (seven kills) and Pearson (six kills). Griffith racked up 37 more assists. The digs category leaders included Wilson (18), Muisenga (14) and first-year outside hitter Temilade Adekoya (13).
The Maroons hit .262 overall, making a mere nine errors.
