PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The No. 8 University of Chicago volleyball team split their first day of the University Athletic Association Round Robin #2 Saturday, rebounding from a loss to #12 Emory with a 3-0 sweep over New York University.
The Maroons (22-3, 3-1 UAA) lost just their third match of the year in the three-set setback to the Eagles (15-5, 4-1), before handling the Violets (13-10, 1-4) in the day's second match in Pittsburgh.
UCHICAGO 3, NYU 0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-11)
The Maroons' attack proved to be very efficient in their second match of the day, as UChicago hit .323 and held NYU to a .036 attack percentage in the win.
Junior Madison Pearson was the lone UChicago player with double-digit kills with 13 (two block assists) and Audrey Scrafford (nine kills) and Anne Marie Stifter (six kills) added to the Maroons' offense.
Sophomore Emma Griffith delivered 37 assists and had eight digs and senior Sarah Muisenga led the defense with 10 digs. Pearson (.375) and Scrafford (.571) both hit for stellar numbers for UChicago, committing just five errors between them.
UChicago's best game proved to be the final set, when the Maroons hit for .571 and held NYU's attack to a -.222.
#12 EMORY 3, #8 UCHICAGO 0 (19-25, 21-25, 23-25)
In Saturday's opening match, the Maroons saw their nine-match winning streak end against a tough Emory squad. The Eagles escaped with a 25-19 victory in the first set and held off the Maroons in the final two, winning by a combined seven points.
Both teams hit well for the match, with Emory finishing with a .291 attack percentage compared to .279 for the Maroons. It was the Eagles' serving that proved to be a major factor, as Emory served for 12 aces, led by four each from Leah Saunders and Karissa Dzurik.
UChicago's offense was balanced, with junior Anabella Pinton leading the way with eight kills. Junior Madison Pearson – who hit .700 with no errors – chipped in seven kills, senior Audrey Scrafford added six kills and classmate Sarah Muisenga had five.
Three players had double-digit kill numbers for the Eagles, who had 46 total kills to UChicago's 34: Dzurik (13), Saunders (11), Tara Martin (10).
