ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The No. 11 University of Chicago volleyball team held off host Augustana College in a five-set thriller Saturday afternoon to capture the Maroons' 25th win of the year.
The Maroons (25-3) won their fourth-straight match, defeating the Vikings (14-12) by scores of 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 24-26, and 15-12.
Senior Sarah Muisenga led the offense – which featured four Maroons in double-figure kills – with 19 kills, hitting a stellar .306 for the match. She added 25 digs and two service aces in an all-around effort.
Sophomore Emma Griffith delivered a match-high 55 assists and recorded 23 digs and four more UChicago players had double-digit dig numbers, as Griffith was joined by Muisenga (25), Katherine Wilson (23), Stifter (19), and Temilade Adekoya (14).
After dropping the first set, 25-22, UChicago regrouped with two-straight set wins, hitting .268 and .220 in Games 2 and 3. The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair with the host Vikings come out on top by two, 26-24, to set up the tiebreaking fifth set.
UChicago squashed any momentum the hosts might have had from the Set 4 win with a 6-2 run in the deciding game, led by two kills by Muisenga and a kill each from Pearson and Stifter. The Vikings regrouped, however, after a timeout, outscoring the Maroons 8-4 to tie the match at 10-all.
Two ensuing attack errors opened the door for UChicago to seal the win, and Muisenga netted two more kills in the final three points to give the Maroons the edge.
UChicago hit .188 for the match compared to .153 for Augustana in match that lasted 2 hours and 7 minutes.
The match marked the fifth five-set contest of the season for the Maroons, who are 4-1 in marathon matches. The lone loss was a 3-2 setback at No. 1 Calvin Sept. 18.
