CHICAGO – The ninth-ranked University of Chicago capped its season-opening weekend with two hard-fought victories, defeating two teams receiving votes in the preseason national poll Saturday.

The Maroons (3-1) beat both DePauw University (1-2) and University of Texas-Dallas (2-2) on Saturday to conclude the 2019 Gargoyle Classic. In Friday's opening night, UChicago downed Concordia University (Wis.) before falling to University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

At the conclusion of the weekend, UChicago had three honorees on the All-Tournament Team: Emma Griffith, Anne Marie Stifter and Fredericka Paulson.

UChicago made its final match its best of the weekend, as the Maroons fought their way back from a first-set loss to top a fiery Texas-Dallas squad in four, 23-25, 29-27, 25-22, and 25-17.

The second set – a marathon that featured 56 total points – swung the tide back to the Maroons, who capitalized off three-straight UTD service errors down the stretch that led to back-to-back, set-clinching kills by Fredericka Paulson and Anne Marie Stifter.

After coming out on top in Set 3, the fourth and deciding set was all Maroons, as UChicago swung for a blistering .444 attack percentage with 18 kills and just two errors. Sophomore Temilade Adekoya stepped up down the stretch, recording a weekend-high 14 kills (.235) and 20 digs for the Maroons, while the senior Stifter led with 15 kills and 15 digs.

Paulson added 10 kills and 26 digs and senior Madison Pearson (eight kills) and rookie Ellie Alden (seven kills, four block assists) also aided in the effort. Junior Emma Griffith delivered 43 assists and added 14 digs for the Maroons, who hit .210 for the match compared to .171 for the Comets.

The Maroons bounced back from Friday night's loss with a sweep of their own over the Tigers, who didn't go down quietly in a three-set battle. UChicago took a close first set 25-23, cruised in Set 2 (25-16) and then held off DePauw in the deciding third, 25-23.

The Maroons hit a crisp .219 for the match, bolstered by the third set when they swung for 19 kills and just four errors (.326). Senior Anne Marie Stifter led the offense with 12 kills – including the match-clincher – and added six digs in a contest where she hit .333. Junior Mikayla Hardy added 10 kills and five block assists and rookie Ellie Alden added six block assists and five kills.

Fredericka Paulson led the defense with 16 digs (she added seven kills) and Katherine Wilson (13 digs) and Emma Griffith (12 digs) also aided the effort, with Griffith delivering a match-best 38 assists. UChicago was dominant at the net, totaling 14 block assists to DePauw's two (though the Tigers did have four solo blocks).
