BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The University of Chicago volleyball team got off to a hot start and rode that wave to a pair of victories on day one of Illinois Wesleyan University's Holiday Inn Express Classic on Friday night.
The No. 13-ranked Maroons improved their season record to 5-1.
UChicago 3, Otterbein 0
UChicago seized control from the outset against Otterbein University. The Maroons hit .440 in the first set with only one attack error, while the Cardinals bogged down and hit -.038. That disparity spurred UChicago on to capture the set 25-12.
The second set was also comfortably controlled by the Maroons, who hit .220 and went up 2-0 (25-17). The third set saw both offenses struggle to execute. However, UChicago closed out the sweep 25-21.
Junior libero Katherine Wilson collected 22 digs defensively. Senior outside hitter Anne Marie Stifter joined her in double figures with 12 digs while adding eight kills. Senior middle hitter Madison Pearson contributed in all phases with eight kills, three aces and six blocks. Junior setter Emma Griffith racked up 28 assists, three aces and five digs.
Overall, UChicago registered a .212 hitting percentage compared to .073 by Otterbein. The Maroons served up 11 aces and totaled nine team blocks.
UChicago 3, Hendrix 0
The nightcap against Hendrix College also featured a sweep for the Maroons, who hit above .200 in each of the three sets and .238 overall. The winning scores were 25-18, 25-23 and 25-20.
Wilson upped her dig count to 27 over the three sets for a total of 49 on the night (8.2 digs per set). Four other Maroons reached double-digit digs, including Stifter (15), junior outside hitter Fredericka Paulson (13), sophomore outside hitter Temilade Adekoya (11) and Griffith (10). The junior setter dished out 37 assists to guide the offense, adding in two aces for good measure.
Offensively, Pearson led the way with 12 kills and a .391 hitting percentage. Stifter posted 11 kills, and first-year middle hitter Ellie Alden hit .500 with nine kills.
