WALTHAM, Mass. – The University of Chicago volleyball team began the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #1 on a high note Saturday, beating New York University and Case Western Reserve University by 3-0 margins.
The UAA Round Robin #1 is being hosted this weekend by Brandeis University. The No. 6-ranked Maroons improved to 12-1 on the season.
UChicago 3, NYU 0
UChicago controlled the opening two sets handily by scores of 25-18 and 25-19. The third set was back and forth, featuring 12 tied scores. In the end, the Maroons closed out 25-23 for the sweep.
Junior outside hitter Fredericka Paulson's efficiency paced the offense, as she hit .524 with 13 kills on 21 attempts while adding nine digs. Senior outside hitter Anne Marie Stifter led all hitters with 14 kills while contributing 11 digs. Junior setter Emma Griffith handed out 38 assists and scored three aces. Junior libero Katherine Wilson collected 11 digs and two aces.
UChicago hit .309 as a team while the Violets swung at a .154 clip.
UChicago 3, Case Western Reserve 0
The afternoon match saw the Maroons never trail through the first two sets (25-20 and 25-17). UChicago remained in control in the third for another shutout, 25-18.
The Maroons converted on 34 percent of their attacks in the third set to give themselves a total match hitting percentage of .214. CWRU matched NYU at .154 hitting percentage.
Stifter was the lead attacker once more, scoring 12 kills to go with 12 digs. Senior middle hitter Madison Pearson posted 10 kills, while Paulson and first-year middle hitter Ellie Alden (four blocks) contributed nine kills apiece.
Griffith produced 37 assists running the offense. Wilson served up five aces and tallied 13 digs. Junior outside hitter Mikayla Hardy snagged a team-high 15 digs.
