WALTHAM, Mass. – A resounding three-set sweep victory over rival Washington-St. Louis capped a perfect opening weekend of University Athletic Association play for the No. 6 University of Chicago volleyball team Sunday.
The Maroons (13-1, 3-0 UAA) captured their twelfth-straight win and didn't drop a set at UAA Round Robin No. 1 hosted at Brandeis, beating the Bears (11-5, 2-1) by scores of 25-14, 25-17, and 27-25. Saturday, the Maroons topped NYU and Case Western Reserve in three sets each.
Senior Anne Marie Stifter led the offense with 12 kills and first-year Ellie Alden added 10 kills and five block assists up front. Junior Emma Griffith dished out a match-high 30 assists – she surpassed the 3,000 career assist mark over the weekend – aiding six kills each from Fredericka Paulson and Mikayla Hardy, who had a team-best 10 digs.
The Maroons were deadly from the serving line, totaling 11 aces compared to just two for the Bears. Griffith and Hardy each had three and Katherine Wilson and Paulson added two apiece.
UChicago hit a stellar .381 in the opening set with 13 kills and just five errors while holding WashU to a -.120 attack percentage with just five kills and eight errors. The Maroons would finish the match hitting .284 while WashU landed at .082.
The Maroons joined No. 1 Emory as two teams to exit UAA Round Robin #1 unbeaten, as the top-ranked Eagles swept Rochester, Brandeis and Carnegie Mellon in three sets each.
Round Robin #2 is set for Oct. 6 in Atlanta, Ga., where the Maroons will take on Brandeis and Carnegie Mellon. UChicago will face Rochester and Emory at Round Robin #3, held Oct. 20 in Cleveland, Ohio.
