ATLANTA, Ga. – In Sunday's University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #2, the University of Chicago volleyball team maintained its winning ways with victories against Brandeis University and Carnegie Mellon University.
The No. 3-ranked Maroons (16-1 record) have now won 15-straight matches.
UChicago 3, Brandeis 0
The Maroons shook off an early first-set deficit to score nine points in-a-row. Brandeis ended up committing twice as many errors as kills, allowing UChicago to dominate 25-14.
The Judges went ahead 22-8 in the next game, until the Maroons ripped off 14-straight points to tie it up. Junior outside hitter Fredericka Paulson totaled six kills in that run. Brandeis held a set point, but three kills in-a-row put the Maroons over the top 26-24. The third set went UChicago's way as well 25-19 to secure its tenth 3-0 sweep of the year.
The victors hit .274 as a team compared to .059 by the Judges. Paulson scored a team-high 17 kills with nine digs. Junior outside hitter Mikayla Hardy added 12 kills and nine digs of her own. Junior setter Emma Griffith gave out 37 assists and collected 11 digs. Junior libero Katherine Wilson served four aces and dug up 17 balls defensively. Senior outside hitter Anne Marie Stifter contributed 15 digs and six kills.
UChicago 3, Carnegie Mellon 1
In the second match of the day, the Maroons flexed their defensive muscle. No. 14-ranked Carnegie Mellon University was limited to only 38 kills while making 30 errors for a total hitting percentage of .045. On the other side of the net, UChicago hit .142 with 13 more kills than its opponent.
The two teams split the opening sets – the Maroons took the first 25-20 and the Tartans answered in the second 25-23. However, UChicago controlled the proceedings from there, taking the third and fourth sets 25-17 and 25-20, respectively.
Senior middle hitter Madison Pearson led the squad with a .393 hitting percentage and 13 kills. Stifter posted 13 kills and 12 digs for a double-double. Hardy recorded 16 digs and 11 kills. Paulson added 21 digs, six kills and three blocks. Griffith tallied 35 assists, 14 digs and three aces. Wilson had a team-best 26 digs while adding six assists.
