CHICAGO – In a matchup of top 5 nationally-ranked teams with big regional implications, the University of Chicago volleyball emerged triumphant with a 3-1 victory over Carthage College on Tuesday night.
The No. 3-ranked Maroons (19-1 record) won their 18th-straight match while simultaneously ending the 16-match winning streak previously held by the No. 4-ranked Lady Reds (20-2 record).
The battle between the top two teams in the region featured the eighth-ranked offensive hitting percentage (.260) of Carthage versus one of the best defenses in the nation in UChicago (fourth with 20.98 digs per set). The back-and-forth first set saw the two teams still knotted at 19-all, when a six-point burst by the hosts seized the game, 25-19. The Maroons did a good job throughout denying left side attacks.
Carthage upped its service game in the second set and capitalized on UChicago's struggles. A series of poor digs and passes led to the visitors drawing ahead 15-8. The deficit proved too much to overcome and the Lady Reds evened the match up, 25-18. The 18 points were the lowest total UChicago has scored in a set this season.
In the third and fourth sets, the Maroons righted the ship thanks to an airtight defense. The home team regained their composure and found its rhythm once more. The block proved critical on the sides and up the middle. All told, UChicago finished the match with 12 total blocks. Carthage struggled to execute offensively, hitting -.039 in the third set and .000 in the fourth.
UChicago closed strong in the third set with a 9-2 run to take it 25-18. Sophomore outside hitter Temilade Adekoya stepped to the service line to open the fourth set and staked her team to a 9-0 lead before Carthage could find any answers. Adekoya served up three aces in that run.
The lead eventually expanded to 19-5 and UChicago cruised to the finish to clinch the match at 25-16.
The Maroons hit .173 for the match compared to .088 by the Lady Reds. UChicago also posted 20 more digs (99-79).
Junior outside hitter Fredericka Paulson smacked a team-high 19 kills while adding 15 digs and three blocks defensively. Fellow junior outside hitter Mikayla Hardy posted 10 kills with nine digs. Middle hitters Ellie Alden and Madison Pearson combined for 16 kills and 12 blocks. Junior setter Emma Griffith stood out once again with 47 assists, 11 digs and three blocks. Junior libero Katherine Wilson collected a career-high 38 digs.
