HOLLAND, Mich. – The University of Chicago volleyball team maintained its two-month hot streak with a pair of victories at the Hope College Triangular on Saturday.
The No. 1-ranked Maroons improved their record to 24-1.
UChicago 3, Hope 1
First up on the docket was the host – No. 20-ranked Hope (19-6 record), who was just one day removed from an upset victory over No. 2-ranked Calvin University. UChicago came out firing in the opening two sets, hitting .368 in the first and .314 in the second to record matching 25-17 score lines.
The Flying Dutch rebounded in the third set, limiting the Maroons to a .100 hitting percentage to keep the game close. The home side snagged four of the final five points to extend the match, 25-23.
The fourth set saw UChicago get right back on track and utilizing its elite defense to limit Hope to 10 kills versus eight errors. The Maroons never trailed in the set and closed out the match at 25-20.
UChicago hit .247 as a team versus .137 for Hope. The Maroons totaled 10 blocks and posted 11 more digs (76-65). Four Maroons reached double figures in kills, including junior outside hitter Fredericka Paulson (12), senior middle hitter Madison Pearson (11), junior outside hitter Mikayla Hardy (11) and first-year middle hitter Ellie Alden (10). Pearson swung at a .500 clip and picked up five block assists. Alden posted five blocks of her own.
UChicago 3, Alma 0
The Maroons' next opponent was Alma College (16-11 record). UChicago's kill output remained consistent with 14 in each set. The efficiency went up significantly as the match wore on, going from .093 to .265 to .379.
After a close 25-23 victory in the first set, the Maroons did not allow Alma back into the match. UChicago cruised through the second 25-15, then utilized a 14-6 run to put the third set out of reach and earn the sweep, 25-18.
Griffith contributed 35 assists for an offense that converted at a .226 pace. Alma was stifled throughout, only managing a .037 hitting percentage.
Paulson collected a match-high 12 digs to go with five kills and three blocks. Griffith added 10 digs of her own. Pearson and Alden submitted eight kills each.
