CHICAGO – On the last match of the night at the NCAA Division III Regional, the host University of Chicago volleyball team made quick work of their first-round opponent with a 3-0 sweep of Westminster (Mo.) College.
The Maroons (27-3 record) came into the opening weekend of the NCAA Division III Championship as the host of an eight-team regional. Top-seeded UChicago began postseason play with an 8:00 PM match Friday against No. 8-seed Westminster (Mo.) College.
The opening set featured a 10-0 run by the Maroons to put them up 16-5. A pair of kills from junior outside hitter Fredericka Paulson ended the set at 25-18.
Set number two played out closer at the beginning, with the home side holding a 15-12 lead at the midway point. But the set was blown open on sophomore outside hitter Temilade Adekoya's serve. UChicago closed the set on a torrid 10-1 streak to finish at 25-13.
Another 6-1 burst in the third set put the Maroons comfortably ahead, and a closing kill by Paulson clinched the match at 25-17.
Short rallies throughout made for a quick match as UChicago dominated on both sides of the net. The offense recorded a .302 team hitting percentage. The defense racked up 11 total blocks and held Westminster to a .044 hitting percentage.
Senior middle hitter Madison Pearson led the way with eight kills, a .500 hitting percentage, three aces and three blocks. Adekoya contributed six kills (.455 hitting percentage), three aces and 11 digs. First-year middle hitter Ellie Alden posted six blocks and six kills, hitting .556.
