CHANNAHON, Ill. – With some new faces leading the pack, the University of Chicago men's and women's cross country teams both emerged victorious at the season-opening University of St. Francis (Ill.) Invitational on Friday.
Both races were 5K distances, with the women finishing first of 11 teams with 39 points. St. Xavier University was second with 50 points.
Junior Cassidy McPherson earned her first career win with the top time of 18:24.2. She beat out the runner-up from St. Xavier by 1.3 seconds. Senior Madeleine Horvath (18:38.6) and junior Kelsey Dunn (18:40.2) were both in the top 10 at seventh and eighth place, respectively. In a field of 97 women's participants, UChicago had five finishers in the top 15.
The men's team also put up a winning performance as the Maroons were first with 36 points. The host St. Francis was next out of 10 teams with 45 points.
UChicago's top runner was Timofey Karginov, who posted his highest-ever finish in a collegiate cross country race. The senior placed second in a time of 15:14.3, which was clear of third place by nearly 20 seconds. Junior Peter Kreuch was next across the line in sixth at 15:37.4, and freshman Tim Koenning was eighth in 15:39.5. Overall, the Maroons bunched up effectively and took 11 out of the top 25 spots in the final standings. The race featured 115 total runners.
