Kurtenbach wins NCAA Midwest Regional, Maroon cross country places third and ninth

WINNECONNE, Wis.Khia Kurtenbach came away as the individual women's regional champion to highlight the University of Chicago's efforts at the 2016 NCAA Division III Cross Country Midwest Regional on Saturday.

In the overall team standings, the Maroon women finished third out of 38 teams while the UChicago men were ninth of 33 teams. A total of 265 women and 247 men participated in the 6K and 8K races at Lake Breeze Golf Club.

Both UChicago teams are now vying for an at-large spot in the NCAA Division III Championship. Sixteen at-large bids will be awarded from the nation's eight total regions. The field for nationals will be announced on NCAA.com on Sunday afternoon.

On the women's side, UChicago matched last year's finish when it also took third at the regional. Washington University-St. Louis was the team champion with 66 points, while the Maroons scored 124 points.

Saturday featured a rematch of the top two runners in the University Athletic Association (UAA). Two weeks ago at the conference championships, WashU's Aly Wayne won the title by 22 seconds while Kurtenbach was runner-up. This time around, Kurtenbach turned the tables to win by nearly two seconds over Wayne in a time of 21:41.22.

All told, the Maroon women had four runners earn All-Region accolades – Kurtenbach, junior Cassidy McPherson (25th place, 22:31.54); junior Kelsey Dunn (27th place, 22:37.89); and senior Madeleine Horvath (29th place, 22:40.55).

The UChicago men were ninth in the standings with 278 points. North Central College dominated the field with 37 points. Senior Nick Nielsen received All-Region status by finishing 34th in a time of 25:36.1. The senior duo of Timofey Karginov and Eyal Hanfling both placed in the top 60. Karginov ran a time of 25:57.5 (51st place) and Hanfling crossed the line in 26:06.0 (56th place).
