WOODLAND PARK, N.J. – University of Chicago's Khia Kurtenbach finished her last University Athletic Association Cross Country Championship race on top, as the Maroons' senior captured medalist honors to lead the women's team to a second-place team finish Saturday.
The Maroon men placed fifth overall – led by a pair of first-years – as UChicago churned out solid finishes from both teams at the respective eight-team races held at Garret Mountain Reservation in Woodland Park, N.J.
Kurtenbach, who finished a close second in her last two UAA title races, didn't leave this one to chance, as the 2017 All-American finished a full 10 seconds ahead of second-place Gabrielle Stravach of Emory. She completed the mostly wooded, rocky 6-kilometer course in a time of 23 minutes, 4 seconds, to captured all-conference honors with classmate Cassidy McPherson (14th, 24:19).
Another pair of first-years – this time Abigail Shoemaker and Maggie Boudreau – both ran strong races to place 18th (24:40) and 19th (24:42), respectively, in the 76-runner race. Rounding out the scoring for the Maroons were sophomore Claire Brockway (23rd, 24:53), senior Kelsey Dunn (34th,25:25), and first-year Emma Dyer (39th, 25:30).
Washington-St. Louis swept both team races, as the women's side scored 37 points compared to 74 for the Maroons.
On the men's side, it was Jordan Olson with a surprise finish, as he crossed the line first for the Maroons in seventh place, running a time of 26:26 in the 8K, 77-runner field. It was the first time all season he edged classmate Ryan Cutter, who wasn't far behind in 13th at 26:34. Both earned all-conference finishes for their efforts.
Sophomore Ralph Patejunas was the next Maroons finisher, running a time of 26:57, good for 24th place. Also scoring for UChicago was senior Peter Kreuch (38th, 27:24), sophomore Andrew Kates (42nd, 27:31), junior Jacob Gosselin (47th, 27:39) and first-year Chase Gardner (50th, 27:46).
The Bears of WashU also won the men's race, scoring 40 points ahead of Carnegie Mellon's 79. Only 14 points separated the Maroons (fifth, 115) from third-place Emory (101), while NYU (107) took fourth.
Kurtenbach's championship was the first individual medalist for the Maroon women since Liz Lawton won the UAA title in 2010.
