CHANNAHON, Ill. – A University of Chicago rookie crossed the finish line first and both Maroon teams took home titles in the season opener as the squads dominated the races at University of St. Francis Twilight Invite Friday night.
UChicago first-year Leah Ulrich won the women's 5-kilometer race in a time of 18 minutes, 14 seconds to lead the Maroon women, who took first of 14 teams with all scoring seven in the Top 12.
Senior Claire Brockway (18:18) wasn't far behind in third and teammates Abigail Shoemaker (fourth, 18:24), Maggie Boudreau (sixth, 18:34), Caitlin Jorgensen (ninth, 18:49), Zoe Smith (10th, 18:53) and Sophie Elgamal (12th, 18:57) rounded out the strong contingent of UChicago runners up front.
On the men's side, sophomore Sam Craig was the top finisher for the first-place Maroons, as he crossed in third place with a 5K time of 15:32. Junior Chase Gardner was right behind him in fourth (15:35) and first-year Cy Chittenden took fifth (15:35).
All seven men's scorers placed in the Top 16, rounded out by Charlie Nevins (sixth, 15:36), Alexander Hastings (ninth, 15:41), Valentin Figueira (13th, 15:50) and Andrew Kates (16th, 15:53) led the UChicago pack.
