Stephen Fleagle enters his sixth year on the University of Chicago cross country and track & field staff in 2017-18.
In 2014, Fleagle helped guide pole vaulter Michael Bennett to an undefeated indoor season and a national championship at the NCAA indoor track and field championships. Bennett followed it up by finishing national runner-up in the outdoor season, which ended in a jump-off to determine the championship. Bennett has broken school records in the pole vault in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. In the outdoor season, Bennett increased his PR and school record by nearly eight inches.
In his first four years as a jumps coach, he has coached Semi Ajibola to two high jump conference championships - one indoor and one outdoor. In the long jump, Fleagle has helped coach the women to 11 UAA All-Conference awards and Pam Yu to a 14th place showing at the 2014 indoor national championships. His jumpers have also garnered two UAA All-Conference awards in the men's triple jump. In pole vault, he has coached two UAA All-Conference honorees on the women's side as well as new records in the indoor and outdoor. He has coached four UAA All-Conference award winners on the men's pole vault with three conference championships by Michael Bennett.
Fleagle graduated from North Central College with a degree in exercise science and a minor in wellness in 2008. In June 2012, he received his master's in sports leadership.
Stephen spent two years as the graduate assistant coach at North Central with the women's cross country and track & field programs while working towards his master’s degree. During his time as a graduate assistant coach, the women finished seventh in the nation in the 2011 outdoor track and field season. The cross country team won conference both years and took 16th in the nation as a team in the 2011 season. During his time, he worked in several different coaching capacities helping with field events and sprinters as needed. He also worked with all event areas in developing proper running mechanics and techniques.
Prior to North Central, Fleagle volunteered as a pole vault and jumps coach at Lincoln-Way West High School. Following graduation, he worked at Athletic Republic as a site director and head trainer helping develop athletes of all ages and sports.
While in college, Stephen specialized in pole vault and long jump as an athlete until injuries sidelined his track & field career. He competed for three years as a soccer player and was captain his senior year. For the track & field season in 2008, he served as a track & field official in several meets at both North Central College and UChicago.
