ROME, Ga. – After dominating play at the ITA Central Regionals in late September, University of Chicago women's tennis looked to make an even bigger statement at the 2023 ITA Cup in Georgia. They were successful in that mission as the Maroons brought home both the single and doubles championships back to the Windy City.
Sylwia Mikos represented UChicago in singles action and ran the table to earn the ITA Cup solo title. The defending UAA women's player of the year began action with a close battle against her opponent from Pacific University but pulled out the come from behind 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 victory in the round of 16. Her contest against a familiar foe from Emory was a little bit easier as the junior got the quarterfinal victory via 6-3, 6-4 scores. Mikos' semifinals win came with a mirror score of 6-4, 6-3 before she absolutely dominated in the finals against her counterpart from Claremont-Mudd-Scripts 6-1, 6-2. The victory serves as Mikos' second straight ITA Cup championship.
The Maroons had two teams qualify for the doubles portion of the tournament, and while the elder Mikos and her teammate
Shianna Guo were eliminated in the semifinals,
Oliwia Mikos and
Rena Lin got the chance for revenge from the other side of the bracket in the championship match. After a round of 16 win of 6-3, 6-0, a quarterfinals victory of 6-1, 6-4, and a semifinals decision of 6-2, 6-0, the freshman and graduate student tandem took down the Babson duo that eliminated their teammates to earn the doubles crown with easy 6-1, 6-1 set wins.
On top of winning titles at the ITA Cup, the efforts of
Sylwia Mikos,
Oliwia Mikos, and
Rena Lin earned each student-athlete UAA Athlete of the Week honors.
The Maroons are now done for the fall and will pick things back up with a home match against Earlham on Saturday, February 3
rd.
