Wrestling Splits Duals On Senior Day

1/20/2024 7:13:00 PM

CHICAGO – University of Chicago wrestling returned to the Ratner Athletic Center for the first time since their season opener to take on both UW-Whitewater and Manchester to wrap up their home slate. While the Maroons had trouble closing out some tight matches against the Warhawks, they had no issue taking down the Spartans to end Senior Day on a high note.

RESULT
UW-Whitewater – 26
UChicago – 12

Manchester – 17
UChicago – 38

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • vs. UW-Whitewater
    • University of Chicago (6-2 team dual record) started Senior Day off with a battle against UW-Whitewater but had a tough time to begin the afternoon as they dropped the first four bouts, though the matches at 141 and 149 could have easily gone the Maroons way.
    • UChicago finally got on the board when Drew Vlasnik picked up a 5-3 decision over a nationally ranked opponent at 157 and they'd win again two matches later at 174 when Tyler Jospeh went over his opponent with a 4-1 decision.
    • The Maroons would pick up another pair of victories thanks to the efforts of Danny Lingen and Gunnar Garriques at 197 (Dec 4-0) and 285 (Dec 3-1) but it wasn't enough to overcome several of the technical falls they suffered in the 14-point loss.
  • vs. Manchester
    • The Maroons had a much easier time with Manchester in the second match of the day as they beat their opponents from the Hoosier State 38-17.
    • They would drop the first match at 125 but would go on to win four straight, including fall victories from Jackson Rustad (133), Sean Conway (141), and Ryan Fleck (149).
    • Gunnar Garriques would also win by fall for his second victory of the day as UChicago cruised to the 21-point victory over the Spartans.
UCHICAGO COMMENTS
  • "Whitewater is a very strong program, and we came very close to pulling out victories in several matches which we were happy to see. When it comes to Manchester, I was happy to see a total team effort and was pleased with the performances of those who don't always see mat time. It was a great day at home to send our seniors off with." – Head coach Leo Kocher
WHO'S ON DECK
