CLEVELAND, Ohio – University of Chicago wrestling was back from break and ready to take on three teams at the UAA-OAC Challenge hosted by Case Western Reserve University. The Maroons started the day off with a close loss before getting back into the win column with two victories to close the day out on Saturday.

RESULT
UChicago – 15
Ohio Northern – 21

UChicago – 30
Heidelberg – 15

UChicago – 35
Mount Union – 14

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • vs. Ohio Northern University
    • The Maroons had their work cut out for them as they dropped the bouts in the 125, 133, and 141 weight classes to start the morning. However, Ryan Fleck and Drew Vlasnik were able to grab wins at 149 and 157 to get UChicago on the board.
    • Ohio Northern went on a run again with another streak of three straight victories and while Michael D'Orazio won via decision at 197 and Gunnar Garriques grabbed a major decision win at 285, it wasn't enough in a six-point loss.
  • vs. Heidelberg University
    • Things were a little bit different against Heidelberg as the Maroons won the first five battles and had already put away their opponents before they finally broke through with a win at 165.
    • Jackson Rustad (133), Sean Conway (141), and Vlasnik (157) all earned their wins via major decisions and Fleck (149) won via fall as the Maroons doubled up Heidelberg to move to .500 on the day. For Rustad, it was his first collegiate victory.
  • vs. University of Mount Union
    • Looking to win a majority of their contests in Cleveland, UChicago took on University of Mount Union in the last match. UMM grabbed two wins to open the bout before the Maroons won seven out of eight to close out the day in dominant fashion.
    • Three of Chicago's victories came via fall with Titobiloluwa Akenroye, D'Orazio, and Garriques, who won for the 20th time this season, all winning in 4:30 or less as the Maroons go 2-1 on the day.
WHO'S ON DECK
The Maroons will head to the Al Hanke Invitational next Saturday as they jump back into the tournament format. The day in Elmhurst is slated to begin at 9:30 am.
