WABASH, Ind. - The University of Chicago men's wrestling team opened their dual meet season with a competitive showing against Wabash on Friday evening. Despite falling short in the overall match, the Maroons displayed resilience, team-first attitudes, and standout performances across multiple weight classes.
Key Bouts:
The dual began in traditional order at 125 pounds, where UChicago dropped the first two matches by technical fall and fall. Third-year team captain
Sean Conway shifted the momentum at 141 pounds, delivering a dominant technical fall victory to put the Maroons on the board. Fellow third-year
Brendan Connolly followed with an 8-6 decision in a hard-fought bout at 149 pounds.
After Wabash took the next three matches, fourth-year
Tyler Joseph stepped up at 184 pounds, bumping up a weight class to secure a gritty three-point decision. The night ended on a high note for UChicago as second-year heavyweight
Teddy Perry edged out his regionally ranked opponent in a 2-1 bout, showcasing both skill and composure.
Varsity Debuts:
Four Maroons made their varsity debuts during the meet: first-years
Matteo Littman, Zack Parisi, and Dan Gunlogson, along with fourth-year
Cael Saxton, whose return to competition was especially meaningful. Saxton, who overcame more than two years of injuries, reflected on the experience:
"It's an honor to be able to represent the university, my coaches, and my teammates—all of whom have given so much to me over my career. I cannot speak higher of our program and the opportunities it has opened up for me. Wrestling is never easy, but it is always worth it."
Coach Gentry's Perspective:
"Wabash created a competitive environment with a loud fan base that was a great experience for our team to compete in," said head coach Gentry. "We fought hard in the bouts, and most of our losses were due to technical mistakes. This is November and early in the season, so we see a lot of potential for continued improvement from this team. Coaches want to especially acknowledge Dan Gunlogson and
Tyler Joseph, who both bumped up weight classes for the team and modeled the team-first attitude that we are building in the program."
Next Up:
The Maroons will compete at the Concordia Open in Wisconsin next Saturday. Known as one of the toughest November tournaments in the country, the event will provide another valuable test for UChicago before they head home for Thanksgiving break.
