No. 2 Women's Tennis Downs PWN To Begin Dual Season

2/5/2024 8:28:00 PM

CHICAGO – Second ranked University of Chicago women's tennis hit the hardcourt for the first time in 2024 and took part in their opening dual of the season when they welcomed Purdue Northwest to XS Tennis. The Maroons dispatched of the Pride quickly and showed how dominate they could be throughout the spring in a 6-1 victory.

RESULT
Purdue Northwest – 1
No. 2 UChicago – 6

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Doubles play was dominated by No. 2 University of Chicago (1-0) as they played local foe Purdue Northwest (4-1 NCAA D-II) under NCAA D-I tennis rules. The Maroons easily took all three matches to grab the first point of the contest.
  • Up 1-0, the two teams focused their attention on singles play but got off to a rough start when Sylwia Mikos lost in the top spot in a very close battle 6-2, 4-6, 8-10. However, the rest of the Maroons stepped up and quickly closed the door on any comeback the Pride might have had in mind. UChicago swept the rest of the contests with most of the sets being won via either 6-0 or 6-1 scores.
CHICAGO COMMENTS
  • "This was a very productive and beneficial match for the team to help re-find our competitive edge after a long offseason. We weren't perfect, but that's a good thing in our eyes at this stage of the season. PNW gave us some good battles and made us work hard for the points we won, which is exactly what we were expecting and hoping for." – Head coach Jay Tee
