CHICAGO – After securing two road wins on Sunday, University of Chicago softball was back in action on the Stagg Grass Fields against Carthage College. The Maroons battled back in a game one walk off win before an early grand slam set the tone in the second contest to help them sweep the Firebirds.
RESULTS
Carthage – 4
UChicago – 5
Carthage – 5
UChicago – 9
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Game One
- University of Chicago spotted Carthage the first four runs of the game in the opening contest of the afternoon, but the Maroons had a comeback in them. The rally started in the bottom of the second when Ava Sinai singled to right to earn an RBI with another run crossing the plate during the same play thanks to an error from the Firebirds right fielder.
- Still down 4-2, UChicago plated a run in the third off a Laila Sims single to left and another in the fourth thanks to an RBI triple from Madeline Murphy to even the game. The contest remained tied at 4-4 until the bottom of the seventh when Sims blasted a two out home run to walk things off.
- Paige Heffke rebounded after some early adversity and earned her 10th victory of the season behind a complete game performance in the Maroons 5-4 win.
- Game Two
- Carthage grabbed the lead first for the second game in a row with a single tally in the top of the second, but it's what the Maroons did in the bottom half of that inning that gave them the lead for good in the contest. With the bases juiced, Sinai deposited a ball past the right centerfield fence for a grand slam to put UC up 4-1.
- A Mia Bocian steal of home in the third and a Matilda Nelson double in the fourth made it 6-2, and while the Firebirds tried to comeback with a three-run top of the fifth, two Maroon runs in the bottom of the frame and another in the sixth got them enough insurance runs to safely win their eighth in a row.
- Delaney Romanchick earned the win with four innings pitched to start the game and Nicole Wong got her first save of the season after an Alana Kimball relief appearance in the four-run victory.
