CHICAGO – University of Chicago men's tennis finally joined in on the fun at XS Tennis just north of campus and began the second round of NCAA tournament play with a battle against Concordia (TX). The Tornados jumped ahead by a point after doubles play but the Maroons stormed back and grabbed the 5-2 victory on Friday.
RESULT
Concordia (TX) – 2
No. 2 UChicago – 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
- University of Chicago (21-1) faced some adversity to start the match as Concordia Texas (16-6) came out and put forth a tremendous effort in doubles play to try and get ahead in the match. Their strategy worked as the Tornados were able to grab the first and second doubles matches to go up 2-1 heading into solo play.
- Knowing that they needed four out of the six matches in singles to take home the win and advance in the tournament, the Maroons didn't mess around with quick wins at both five and six. They then snagged the win in the fourth slot before a medical retirement in the third singles spot gave them the win and put them into the next round.
WHO'S ON DECK
The Maroons will try and win their regional and advance to St. Louis when they take on No. 12 WashU in a third-round matchup. First serve from XS Tennis is slated for 1:00 pm.
