Softball's 12 Game Win Streak Ended By #7 CWRU

CHICAGO – University of Chicago softball headed to Cleveland for their last doubleheader of the regular season on Saturday and tried to push aside No. 7 Case Western Reserve. The Maroons stayed in contention during each contest but couldn't keep their 12 game win streak alive in a doubleheader sweep.

RESULTS
UChicago – 2
No. 7 Case Western Reserve – 4

UChicago – 4
No. 7 Case Western Reserve – 8

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Game One
    • University of Chicago (25-10) started off their last series of the regular season with a tight contest against No. 7 Case Western Reserve (34-6). The Spartans opened the scoring in the top of the first, but the Maroons got one back with a solo shot from Laila Sims to center field.
    • Three more CWRU runs crossed home plate in the third though which would provide them enough insurance tallies to secure the contest. UChicago cut their deficit in half with a double steal in the fifth but were only able to get one runner on in the last two stanzas.
    • Paige Heffke was solid in the circle and got four strikeouts in six innings of work, but the Maroons still fell by the score of 4-2.
  • Game Two
    • The offensive totals for each team would double in the second game of the afternoon but that would still spell an unfortunate outcome for the Maroon and White. Case got two in the first, one in the third, and five in the fifth to propel their eight-run offensive effort in the ballgame.
    • As for UChicago, the Maroons were able to plate a run in the second and tried to start a rally in the latter half of the contest. An Audrey Hui single in the fifth scored a run and another was pushed across in the same frame thanks to a Spartans error.
    • Down 8-3, UC added another tally with a Madeline Murphy single to center but that was the last run they would register on the scoreboard in an 8-4 defeat.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES WHO'S ON DECK
The Maroons will have to wait to see if their season will continue when the NCAA D-III selection show airs on Monday at 10:00 am.
