ST. LOUIS, Mo. – After playing the first two matches of the 2024 NCAA men's tennis tournament on their home court, No. 2 University of Chicago battled No. 8 Denison on a neutral surface to begin quarterfinal play. The Maroons fell behind early but battled back to take down the Big Red and advance to the semifinal match on Wednesday.
RESULT
No. 8 Denison – 3
No. 2 UChicago – 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
- No. 2 University of Chicago (23-1) took home a point in a very close top doubles contest but saw the other two battles go No. 8 Denison's (25-1) way, including an 8-1 loss in the third slot which put them down 2-1 entering the second half of the morning.
- The Maroons haven't been strangers to having to come back this postseason after battling back to take down Concordia (TX) in the second round. That experience helped UChicago once again even after giving up another point to the Big Red in the first singles slot. Hsieh and Sher locked down victories for the Maroon & White before Asokumar and Otero earned the final points with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 3 and 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 6 respectively to allow UChicago to take the match 5-3.
WHO'S ON DECK
The Maroons will move onto semifinal play tomorrow at 12:00 pm against No. 7 Middlebury, a team that dismissed fellow UAA school No. 5 Emory in their portion of the quarterfinals on Tuesday. UChicago is 0-2 all time against the Panthers but haven't taken them on since 2016.
