ST. LOUIS, Mo. – A very eventful week in the Midwest rolled on for newly crowned national champion University of Chicago women's tennis as they entered three student-athletes into the NCAA individual singles/doubles tournament. While the Maroons were unsuccessful for the first time this week after seeing their duo go down in the first round of pairs play, two players won both their matches and will advance to the quarterfinals on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Singles: Rena Lin
- Rena Lin, the top seed in the tournament, started off the afternoon by taking down her opponent from Trinity by battling back in three sets via scores of 1-6, 6-4, and 6-1. She then proceeded to make her second round battle a little bit easier and defeated her counterpart from Middlebury in the minimum two frames with 6-3, 7-5 outcomes.
- Singles: Sylwia Mikos
- Mikos, seeded fifth to start the tournament, went up against a member of Johns Hopkins for the second time this week in St. Louis and advanced to the second round with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 victory. The junior then went on to defeat a representative of Wesleyan, the team they took down for the national championship on Thursday, with scores of 6-2 and 6-4.
- Doubles: Rena Lin/Oliwia Mikos
- Unfortunately, the only match that didn't go the Maroons way was the first round of the doubles championships. The team of Lin and Oliwia Mikos entered ranked as one of the top in the nation but fell behind with a first set loss of 6-3. They didn't back down though and pushed things to a third set with a 6-1 win but ultimately fell in three 6-2.
WHO'S ON DECK
The wins by Mikos and Lin mean they'll be playing again tomorrow when the quarterfinal and semifinals of the singles championship resumes at 10:00 am central.
