ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The 2024 NCAA individual women's tennis tournament rolled on on Sunday with two UChicago student-athletes still in the hunt for the overall win. Both Lin and Mikos came away with a pair of victories to set up a winner take all championship match between the teammates on Memorial Day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Singles: Rena Lin
- Lin started off the day with a dominate 6-4, 6-2 win in the quarterfinals over her opponent from Emory which put her just two matches away from claiming the individual title at the tournament. While her next match wasn't as easy, she still advanced to the finals via a 6-1, 7-6 victory against her opponent from Williams.
- Singles: Sylwia Mikos
- Mikos was still alive on the other side of the bracket as well and earned a quarterfinals victory over her counterpart from Tufts with a three-set come from behind 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win. An opponent from Babson was up next but was dispatched rather quickly by Mikos in 6-1, 6-3 fashion to set up a contest against her teammate for the NCAA individual crown.
CHICAGO COMMENTS
"Playing in the individual tournament after the physicality and emotion involved in the team event is incredibly difficult, especially after winning. What Sylwia and Rena have done this week is unreal. They play tennis for their team, not individual awards, and accolades, but they both stepped up and played for UChicago and their teammates back home. It'll be a great match and both will be champions to their teammates no matter who wins." – Head coach Jay Tee
WHO'S ON DECK
The Maroons will have another national championship to bring home to Chicago on Monday but who it will belong to is a different story. The two teammates will battle it out for the individual title when they begin play at 10:00 am.
