Women's Tennis Opens Season At Gopher Invite

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – University of Chicago women's tennis was back on the court for the first time since winning it all in May and took on some tough competition at the Gopher Invite. The Maroons held their own against their D-I counterparts and came away with wins in half of their matches after three days in Minnesota.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Day One
    • University of Chicago started off with an extremely strong first day at the Gopher Invite by going 13-8 overall, including a 7-4 mark in solo play. The Maroons were led by a victory from Sylwia Mikos when she took down the University of Minnesota's second-best player in dual 6-4 decisions.
    • UChicago went 6-4 in pairs action and got dominating 6-1 wins from the teams of Sylwia Mikos/Oliwia Mikos and Ariana Liu/Kathryn Fang. They were strong even in their losses and were shutout only once on the day.
  • Day Two
    • The Maroons once again faced stiff competition from the D-I ranks on Saturday and took home a 9-13 record. They were 5-6 in singles and saw the elder Mikos grab a 6-4, 6-1 win over her opponent from North Dakota while Charlotte Klein blanked her foe from Northern Iowa with identical 6-0 sets.
    • Things were a little tougher during the other part of the day as they went 4-7 in doubles play. The Mikos sisters grabbed another win, this time over Northern Illinois, while Klein and partner Miranda Yuan took both of their matches against South Dakota with 6-4 outcomes.
  • Day Three
    • A shortened final day led to a record that fell just short of .500 at 7-8. UChicago went 5-6 in one-on-one competition and were help by victories from Erica Ekstrand and Clara Zou with matching 6-2, 6-4 wins.
    • Doubles play saw the Maroons and White go 2-2 with Zou and Sarena Biria winning 6-0 and the duo of Ekstrand and Chong coming away with the victory via a 6-4 result. Overall, UChicago went 29-29 against foes from the Big Ten, The Summit League, the Horizon League, the Big East, and the MAC.
WHO'S ON DECK
The Maroons will be busy once again this upcoming weekend as they'll take on the competition at the ITA Regionals. Action from Kalamazoo, Mich. will take place between Friday, September 27th and Sunday, September 29th.
