CHICAGO- The University of Chicago wrestling team defeated Manchester's Spartans by a score of 28 to 16 on the Maroons senior day, Chicago honored nine graduating senior student-athletes. After a Spartan major decision, UChicago scored five straight wins by bonus points to take a commanding 20 to 4 lead.
Second year, Jackson Rustad put the Maroons on the board at 133 pounds when he defeated his opponent in the first period. Third year captain Sean Conway followed up with another fall at 1:41 before Brendan Connolly scored a decisive technical fall over a nationally ranked opponent on the Manchester squad to capture another victory to finish off the UChicago run.
Spartans got back in the match with three straight victories to close the gap, 20 to 16, heading into the last two matches. Just as the Spartans got a hold of the meet, the Maroons put the score out of reach with a dominant technical fall at 197 pounds as second year Teddy Perry finish the duel with the decision heavyweight.
Prior to the match, nine student athletes were honored for their contribution in commitment to UChicago wrestling. They were, listed in weight class order Dylan Clifford, Amir Williams, Cael Saxton, Darien Estevez, Roland Anderson, Tyler Joseph, Wyatt Haynes, Danny Lingen, and Michael D'Orazio. The talented class of athletes won the UAA team title in 2022 and 2023.They are highlighted by D'Orazio's All-American performance in 2022.
Next, the Maroons will head to Wheaton College for the prestigious Pete Wilson Invite from Friday, Jan. 31, to Saturday, Feb. 1. The meet will kick off at 11 a.m. both days.
