DUBUQUE, Iowa -- The University of Chicago wrestling team opened the season with an impressive performance at the Jim Fox Invite at Dubuque.

Sean Conway and Maksim Mukhamedaliyev each brought home first place finishes in their weight classes to highlight the performances for the Maroons.

In the 141-pound weight class, it was all UChicago. Sean Conway picked up an 8-3 decision win over Loras, a 16-3 major decision win over UW-Platteville, and an 18-2 tech fall win over Loras to reach the championship match as the top seed. On the other side of the draw, Xavier Ortega picked up three wins of his own with a pair of falls against Dubuque and UW-Platteville as well as a major decision win over UW-Platteville to reach the finals. In the championship match, the UChicago duo had a tough-fought battle, but Conway pulled off the 8-4 win to earn the title.

In the 149-pound weight class, Maksim Mukhamedaliyev made his collegiate debut and made a statement with a perfect 3-0 record on the day. En route to his title, Mukhamedaliyev earned two tech falls and a fall while outscoring his opponents 42-4 in his three matches. 

Jackson Rustad was the fourth and final UChicago player to reach the championship match on Saturday. Rustad recorded falls in both the quarterfinals and semifinals against opponents from Dubque. In the finals, he matched up with a wrestler from Loras and came up just short with a 7-6 defeat.

The 13th-ranked Maroons will return to action on Saturday, November 8, as the team travels to Trine University for a multi-team event.
