Men's Tennis Sweeps No. 35 North Central & Roosevelt

CHICAGO – The University of Chicago men's tennis team opened its spring season in commanding fashion, securing a 6-1 win over Roosevelt University on Saturday. The Maroons controlled play from start to finish, winning two of the three doubles matches before rolling through singles competition.Then the team continued its dominant start to the season, securing a 7-0 sweep over No. 35 North Central.

Doubles Dominance Sets the Tone

UChicago set the tempo early, delivering a 2-1 finish in doubles play securing one point for the Maroons. The duo of Matthew Liew and Jacob Lowen led the charge with a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, followed by a Martin Pestana and Gopal Koduri hard-fought 7-5 victory at No. 3 doubles. Markus Ekstrand and Carl Radtke battled but fell 6-3 at No. 2.

Maroons Cruise Through Singles Play

Building off their early momentum, UChicago showcased its depth with dominant singles performances across the lineup. Liew was clinical at No. 1 singles, posting a 6-1, 6-1 win, while John Walentowicz blanked his opponent in the second set to claim a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 2.

At No. 3 singles, Sam Goidel fought through a tight second set but couldn't edge out his opponent and lost 6-3, 7-5, but Radtke cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 4. Koduri and Kane Kelley capped off victories with Koduri delivering a steady 6-4, 6-4 result at No. 5 and Kelley prevailing in a first-set tiebreak en route to a 7-6(6), 6-3 win at No. 6.

Doubles Play Sets the Tone

UChicago wasted no time asserting control, sweeping doubles play to take the early 1-0 lead. Emil Grantcharov and Jack Wong cruised to a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles, followed by Derek Hsieh and Pat Otero earning a 6-3 win at No. 2. The Maroons completed the sweep at No. 1 doubles, where Alexander Ekstrand and Andrei Leonov edged out a 7-6 (7-3) victory in a tight battle.

Singles Domination Secures the Shutout

The Maroons carried their momentum into singles play, winning five of six matches in straight sets. Grantcharov was first off the court, delivering a dominant 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles. Hsieh followed with a strong 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 1, and Ajer Sher rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4.

At No. 2 singles, Ekstrand outlasted his opponent in a tightly contested second set, sealing a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) win. Otero battled through a three-setter at No. 5, taking the deciding set 10-3 after splitting the first two. Wong capped off the sweep with a gritty comeback at No. 6, bouncing back from an opening-set loss to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
