SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The University of Chicago women's tennis team opened their spring trip by flexing their muscles and showing why they are the #1 team in the country with wins over #21 Bowdoin and Southwestern (TX).

The Maroons opened the day with a top-25 battle with Bowdoin. The Maroons picked up the win at #3 doubles with Erica Ekstrand and Charlotte Klein winning 6-3. After Bowdoin leveled the doubles portion at 1, the #2 doubles team of Shianna Guo and Lauren Khou clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win.

In singles, it was the Polar Bears who took control of the match early on at the top positions, but the Maroons didn't go away easily. Bowdoin leveled the match at one with a win at the #2 position, but Oliwia Mikos immediately put UChicago in front with a 6-3, 6-3 win at #6 singles. Then, Sarena Biria and Clara Zou were able to clinch the match for the Maroons with straight set wins, both outlasting their opponent in a tiebreaker to win the set. The final point for UChicago came at the #3 position at Erica Ekstrand battled back from a first-set defeat to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Up the road in Austin, UChicago took on Southwestern (TX). The Maroons swept all three doubles positions, highlighted by a 7-6(7-5) narrow victory at the #1 doubles spot by Isabelle Chong and Nika Vesely. Ariana Liu and Riya Singh also dominated in their match at #3 doubles with a 6-0 victory.

In singles play, UChciago continued to dominate with easy wins by Brooke Pedersen, Isabelle Chong, and Ariana Liu, losing just four total games in the three matches. Riya Singh also added a 6-0, 7-5 victory, and Miranda Yuan outlasted her opponent with a 6-2, 6-7, 10-8 win at #3 singles to complete the 6-1 win for UChicago.

With the wins, the Maroons improve to 11-1 on the season. They will return to the court on Tuesday, March 18 as they battle the #10 Trinity (TX) Tigers at 5 PM CT in San Antonio.
