ORANGE, Calif. -- The University of Chicago men's tennis team picked up their third consecutive win over a ranked opponent on Wednesday with a 6-1 win over #32 Chapman.
UChicago opened the match strong with wins at #2 and #3 doubles to take the doubles point for a 1-0 lead.
Alexander Ekstrand and
Markus Ekstrand teamed up for a 6-3 victory at #3 doubles, and
Derek Hsieh and
Jack Wong combined for a 6-4 win at #2 doubles.
In singles play, the trend continued as the Maroons rolled at the bottom of their lineup.
Pat Otero and
Michael Choi finished off their wins at #5 and #3 singles in just over an hour with just four games lost combined in their matches. UChicago then quickly clinched the match victory with wins at #4 and #6 singles by
Ajer Sher (6-3, 6-3) and
Matthew Liew (6-3, 6-2).
With a 5-0 lead, all eyes turned to the top of the lineup with the #1 and #2 singles matches remaining on the court. Chapman was able to pick up the win at #1 singles and send the #2 singles match into a third set, but
Alexander Ekstrand battled back to win 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 to give the Maroons the 6-1 victory.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 11-1 on the season. UChicago will return to the court on Friday, March 21 as they kick off the Stag-Hen Open at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. The Maroons will battle #29 Pomona-Pitzer at 10 AM PT on Friday, and their second-round match will be against either #11 Trinity (TX) or #14 Johns Hopkins at 3 PM PT. The final round match will take place on Saturday, March 22.
