3/20/2025 9:20:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. -- The University of Chicago softball team capped off their spring trip with a four-game win streak after taking down Macalester and Hamline in the final games of the trip.

In the opening game of Thursday, the Maroons and the Scots got into a pitching dual with neither team able to touch up the opposing pitcher. After a first inning home run for the Scots, Paige Heffke buckled down and retired 13 of the next 15 batters she faced, facing the minimum of those 5.0 innings pitched. She finished the game with just three hits, 1 run, and 1 walk allowed and 8 strikeouts in the complete game. Heffke also picks up her sixth consecutive win on the mound after an 0-2 start to the season.

On the offensive side, UChicago had their best scoring chance in the second inning after they put a runner in scoring position after hits by Natalie Antin and Anna Jensen, but they were unable to bring home a run. The Maroons went into the final inning of play needing a run to level the score. Matilda Nelson and Antin opened the inning with singles, and a walk by Laila Sims loaded the bases with nobody out for UChicago. After the Scots got one out at the plate, Mia Bocian ripped a ground ball at the second basemen, and Ashlee Boodoo was able to beat the play at the plate to level the score. Then, the Maroons finished off the win with Laila Sims catching the defense napping and stealing home to win the game 2-1.

In the second game of the day, UChicago got the scoring started with a four-run third inning. The Maroons tallied four consecutive RBI singles in the inning from Madeline Murphy, Audrey Hui, Matilda Nelson, and Natalie Antin to take a 4-0 lead early in the Florida finale.

After pitching 5.2 shutout innings with just four hits allowed, Alana Kimball let Hamline get on the board for the first time in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 4-1. She would finish her outing with 6.0 innings pitched and just one run and six hits allowed en route to her second win of the season.

After Hamline cut into the lead, UChicago added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning as Matilda Nelson ripped a two-out, two-run single into right field to stretch the lead to 6-1. Evelyn Soh came in to close out the game in the seventh and helped the Maroons earn the 6-2 victory in the final game of their spring trip.

Matilda Nelson led the offensive attack with a team-high 4 hits and 3 RBIs in the pair of games today. Natalie Antin added 3 hits, and Audrey Hui contributed two hits for the only three Maroons with multiple hits on the day.

With the wins, the Maroons win streak moves to five games, and they improve their overall record to 8-6 on the season. UChicago will return to action for their home opener on Wednesday, March 26 as they host the #25 Calvin Knights for a doubleheader at 3 PM CT and 5 PM CT.
