CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The University of Chicago men's tennis team picked up wins over #29 Pomona-Pitzer and #14 Johns Hopkins on Saturday to advance to the championship match of the Stag-Hen Invitational.
Pomona-Pitzer opened the match by winning the doubles point with a 2-1 win in doubles play. The Maroons picked up a win at #2 doubles with
Derek Hsieh and
Jack Wong taking the match 6-4, but the Sagehens were able to hold on in the final two positions and clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 win at #3 doubles.
In singles play,
 Michael Choi leveled the match with a 6-0, 6-3 win at #4 singles.
Alexander Ekstrand and
Derek Hsieh added 6-4, 6-1 wins for the University of Chicago at #2 and #3 singles to help the Maroons take a 3-1 advantage with three matches remanining. UChicago clionched the win at #5 singles with
Ajer Sher winning the match 6-3, 6-3 to give the Maroons the 4-3 win.
In the semifinals, the Maroons dropped the doubles point again with
Andrei Leonov and
Pat Otero winning 7-5 at #1 doubles for the only UChicago doubles win. However, they came back with a vengence in singles play to take control of the match.
Alexander Ekstrand dominated for a 6-1, 6-2 win at #1 singles to level the match at one.
Then, moments later, the UChicago added two more wins to take a 3-1 advantage as
Derek Hsieh and
Michael Choi rolled to wins at #3 and #4 singles.
Ajer Sher was able to close out the match win with a 7-5, 7-6(9-7) victory at #5, and
Matthew Liew added the final point in a 6-4, 6-3 win at #6 singles.
With the wins, the Maroons improve to 13-1 on the season and advance to the championship match of the Stag-Hen Invitational on Saturday. UChicago will battle #1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 10 AM PT on Saturday in a rematch with the top-ranked Stags.
