Women's Swim-Dive Takes 7th Place with 20 All-American Awards

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The University of Chicago women's swimming and diving team brought home a seventh-place finish in the National Championships. Overall for the week, the Maroons broke seven school records and earned 20 All-American awards.

The 400 Medley Relay team of Elisabella Forest, Alicia Soosai, Emily Xu, and Karen Zhao gave UChicago their top performance of the opening day as they broke the school record with a time of 3:40.82 in the preliminary race and broke the school record a second time in the finals with a time of 3:40.50 to bring home a 4th-place finish. Elisabella Forest also broke a school record in the 100 Backstroke as she swam a 54.75 split in the opening leg of the 400 Medley Relay.

Forest added two more school records and two more 1st-Team All-American honors during the week in the 100 Backstroke and the 200 Backstroke events. The senior earned a fourth-place finish in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 55.09 after breaking the school record in prelims with a time of 54.46. She also placed fifth in the 200 Backstroke in a time of 1:59.48 after breaking the school record in prelims with a time of 1:58.62.

Soosai, Xu, and Zhao were joined by Ioanna Georgopoulou in the 200 Medley Relay on Friday to take home another 1st-Team All-American honor in a relay event with a 7th place finish in a time of 1:42.28.

Emily Xu led the team with six All-American awards during the week as she added four 2nd-Team All-American honors with the two 1st-Team relays mentioned above.

Karen Zhao gave the Maroons their first 1st-Team All-American individual performance of the meet as she ripped a career-best time of 1:49.51 in the 200 Freestyle to bring home a 5th-place finish overall.

Alicia Soosai finished the meet with four overall All-American awards, two in relays and two in individual events. Soosai finished in 13th place with a time of 1:03.01 in the 100 Breaststroke, and she finished in 14th place in the 200 Breaststroke in a time of 2:17.23.

In the 1-meter diving competition, four UChicago divers took to the air, and all four of the Maroons earned All-American honors in the event. Sumiye Allen led the team with an 8th-place finish to be the lone 1st-Team All-American of the group. Veronica Fong, Cynthia Tang, and Lilia Atanda all added 2nd-Team All-American honors with finishes of 10th, 12th, and 15th.

Then, in 3-meter diving, the UChicago divers once again brought home All-American awards for allm four of their divers. Veronica Fong led the team with a 7th-place finish, and Lilia Atanda, Cynthia Tang, and Sumiye Allen all added 2nd-Team All-American honors with finishes of 9th, 14th, and 15th.

Two more All-American performances by the University of Chicago also brought a pair of school records for the Maroons. The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Emily Xu, Genesee Quon, Sophia Lee, and Karen Zhao brought home a 9th-place finish with a school record time of 1:32.61 to win the consolation final. Emily Xu also added a school record in the 50 Freestyle as she opened the relay with a 23.27 split in the 50 Free.

Finally, the lone remaining 2nd-Team All-America performance came from the 800 Freestyle Relay team of Emily Xu, Annabel Olivo, Julia Polsky, and Karen Zhao which brought home an 11th-place finish in a time of 7:28.06.
