CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago softball team played a competitive and hard-fought game against the 18th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis Bears on Friday afternoon to open up their UAA season. Despite strong pitching and defensive efforts, the Maroons were narrowly defeated 1-0 in the first game of their weekend series.
Game Summary
The game was a true pitching duel, with both teams held scoreless through the first four innings. In the top of the fifth, WashUÂ delivered the only run of the game, doubling down the left field line to bring in Smith and give the Bears a 1-0 lead. UChicago continued to battle hard at the plate, but WashU's pitcher, M. Brooks, was able to maintain the lead through the final innings.
Key Performances for Chicago
- Paige Heffke (7-3) put forth an impressive performance in the circle, going the distance and giving up only 6 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 3. The Maroons' defense was solid, and while the offense had trouble breaking through, they showed resilience.
- Natalie Antin lead the team with a 2-for-3 performance.Â

Strong Defense: UChicago played excellent defense, with Matilda Nelson making some key plays at third base. Although the offense was kept in check, the Maroons continued to show grit throughout the game.

Offensive Fight: Despite the shutout, UChicago showed plenty of determination, putting together some solid at-bats, including multiple players getting on base and creating opportunities.Chicago recorded four hits to the Bears six.Â
