#4 Men's Tennis Battles #27 NYU in UAA Semifinals on Saturday

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago men's tennis team continue their run at their fourth UAA title in the past six tournaments as they battle #27 NYU in Saturday's semifinal round. The Maroons took down Rochester 4-0 in the opening match on Friday.

#4 UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO NOTES:

* UChicago comes in with a 20-2 record overall this season following a 4-0 win over Rochester to open the UAA Tournament on Friday.
* The Maroons have added wins over #14 WashU, #22 Carnegie Mellon, #26 UW-Whitewater, and #34 Gustavus Adolphus on their seven-match winning streak.
* UChicago comes in at 11-2 in matches over top-35 teams this season with both losses coming to #1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
* Michael Choi leads the Maroons in singles play this season with a 21-3 record overall and a 15-1 record in dual matches to take the #27 spot in the NCAA Division III singles rankings and the #10 spot in the Central Region.
* Alexander Ekstrand has also added 21 wins with just four losses as he is ranked as the #5 singles player in NCAA Division III and the #3 singles player in the Central Region.
* Emil Grantcharov also enters the weekend ranked as the #12 singles player in NCAA Division III and the #4 singles player in the Central Region with a 15-8 record on the year.
* In doubles play, Derek Hsieh has played lights out with a 23-6 record to lead the Maroons. Hsieh and Grantcharov are ranked as the #22 doubles team in NCAA Division III and the #7 team in the Central Region with a 12-5 record as a team.
* Andrei Leonov and Pat Otero have played well in doubles play this season and enter the weekend ranked as the #3 doubles team in NCAA Division III and the #2 doubles team in the Central Region with an 12-7 record as a tandem.
* Following this weekend, UChicago will set their sights defending their 2024 National Championship with the 2025 NCAA Tournament kicking off on the weekend of May 9-11.

#27 NEW YORK UNIVERSITY NOTES:

* NYU enters the UAA Semifinals at 11-2 overall with three consecutive wins.
* The Violets upset #21 Carnegie Mellon in the first round of the UAA Tournament, and they closed out the regular season with wins over Rochester (7-0) and Stevens (6-1).
* With the opening round win, the Violets have locked up their first top-4 finish in the UAA Tournament since 2006 when they placed fourth. A win on Saturday or Sunday will guarantee the first top-3 finish in program history.
* Boren Zheng and Bryan Hui lead the Violets with 16 singles wins on the season. Zheng enters the weekend as the #16 singles player in the Northeast Region.
* In doubles play, the #1 doubles tandem of Zheng and Philip Martin have been lights out with an 11-1 record as a team. The duo is currently ranked as the #8 doubles team in the Northeast Region.

SERIES HISTORY:

* UChicago leads the all-time series 7-0 over NYU with the Violets never winning more than three individual matches in a match.
* This will be the first meeting between the two sides since UChicago won 9-0 in 2018.
* All seven meetings all-time have come in the UAA Tournament at a neutral site.
