ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The University of Chicago women's tennis team took down #2 Emory with a 4-0 win to bring home their fourth consecutive UAA Championship.
The Maroons opened the match by earning the doubles point in dramatic fashion.
Oliwia Mikos and
Charlotte Klein wasted no time taking the 6-2 victory at #1 doubles, but the Eagles were able to battle back and take the #2 doubles match to leave the doubles point up to the #3 doubles match. The duo of
Sylwia Mikos and
Clara Zou, playing together in a match for the first time ever, took a quick 4-2 advance, but Emory answered with three straight games to take a 5-4 lead. However, Mikos and Zou responded with a run of their own, breaking serve at 5-5, to bring home the 7-5 victory and a 1-0 lead for UChicago.
In singles play, the momentum from the doubles matches carried over as the Maroons were playing lights out.
Sarena Biria doubled the UChicago lead with a 6-1, 6-1 lead at #4 singles, and
Clara Zou added a 6-2, 6-1 win at #5 singles to put the Maroons just one match from the title. After rolling through the first set,
Sylwia Mikos was locked in a second-set battle until she picked up a big break of serve at 3-3 to help her hold on for the 6-1, 6-4 win in the deciding match.
Brooke Pedersen and
Nicole Geller both won the first set in their matches, and
Erica Ekstrand was leading in the second set after losing the first when the match was decided.
The UAA Championship for the Maroons is the fourth consecutive title and the sixth overall UAA title, and they also improve to 78-3 against Division III opponents since the 2020 season.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 20-1 on the season and extend their win streak over UAA opponents to 26 consecutive matches. With the win, UChicago earns the automatic bid in the 2025 NCAA Tournament where they will look to defend their 2024 National Championship. The tournament will begin on the weekend of May 8-11 with the NCAA Division III Selection Show taking place on Monday, May 5 at 11 AM CT on NCAA.com.
