KENOSHA, Wis. -- The University of Chicago softball team fell short in a pair of one-run games at Carthage on Tuesday night in their final non-conference games of the season.

The Firebirds got the scoring started in the second inning of game one with back-to-back hits, a double and a single, to bring home the first run of the game. UChicago did not take long to level the score at one. After Mia Bocian walked, Anna Jensen and Sedona Ding advanced her bases before Madeline Murphy beat out an infield single to score Bocian.

The Maroons would shut down Carthage in the third, but they capitalized on back-to-back extra base hits in the fourth inning to retake the one-run lead. The team would have chances in the fifth and sixth innings with a runner in scoring position with just one out, but they were unable to push the tying run across in the 2-1 loss.

Paige Heffke was dominant in the circle with just five baserunners allowed and four strikeouts in the complete game.

In the second game of the day, zeros stayed on the scoreboard for several innings until the Firebirds were able to manufacture a run in the third inning with a hit, a sacrifice bunt, and a pair of fielder's choices.

The two teams combined for just one hit over the next two innings until the bottom of the sixth when Carthage doubled their lead with back-to-back extra base hits for the third time of the doubleheader.

The Maroons would get one run back a triple by Mia Bocian and an RBI single by Matilda Nelson, but the game-tying run was stranded on first in the second 2-1 loss of the day.

Nicole Wong pitched great in the circle with 3 strikeouts and 0 walks while allowing just 6 hits in 5.1 innings. Alana Kimball came in to close out the game with the final two outs.

With the loss, UChicago falls to 15-19 on the season. The Maroons will return to action on Friday afternoon as they travel to New York City for a three-game series with the NYU Violets.
