#4 Men's Tennis Reaches Quarterfinals with 4-0 Win over #30 Gustavus Adolphus

WHITEWATER, Wis. -- The University of Chicago men's tennis team took down #30 Gustavus Adolphus in the third round of the NCAA Tournament to reach their fifth NCAA Quarterfinal in the past six seasons.

UChicago took the doubles point to open the match with a great comeback in the deciding match. Pat Otero and Andrei Leonov rolled to a 6-3 victory at the #1 singles position, but the Maroons dropped the #3 singles match to level the score at one. In the deciding match, the duo of Alexander Ekstrand and Derek Hsieh sent the match to a tiebreak, but the Gusties jumped out to an early 5-1 lead. However, Ekstrand and Hsieh would not go away as the duo scored the final six points of the match to take the 7-6(7-5) victory and an early 1-0 lead in the match.

In singles play, UChicago quickly doubled their lead with a lead by Matthew Liew at #6 singles. Liew rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 win to take a 2-0 advantage in the match. Derek Hsieh added his second match win of the day with a 7-6(7-4), 6-0 win at #3 singles to put the Maroons just one win away from the quarterfinals.

In the final match of the day, Michael Choi brought home the deciding points with a 6-4, 6-2 win at #5 singles for the 4-0 victory for the Maroons. Emil Grantcharov also held a 6-3, 5-4 win in the #1 singles match before the match came to an end.

With the win, the Maroons improve to 23-3 on the season. The team will return to action on May 20 as they travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to take on #5 Case Western Reserve in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
