#5 Men's Tennis Aims to Redeem UAA Finals Defeat to #4 Case Western in Quarterfinals

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago men's tennis team continues their run to back-to-back National Championships on Monday evening as they take on a familiar foe in the National Quarterfinals. The Maroons will take on #4 Case Western Reserve with a chance to avenge their loss in the UAA Championship match at the end of April.

#5 UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO NOTES:

* UChicago comes in with a 23-3 record overall this season after a second place finish in the UAA.
* The Maroons had their eight-match winning streak snapped in the loss in the UAA Championship. The team had compiled wins over #14 WashU, #22 Carnegie Mellon, #26 UW-Whitewater, #27 NYU, and #34 Gustavus Adolphus.
* UChicago comes in at 13-3 in matches over top-35 teams this season with two losses against #1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and one to #4 Case Western.
* Michael Choi leads the Maroons in singles play this season with a 23-3 record overall and a 17-1 record in dual matches to take the #23 spot in the NCAA Division III singles rankings and the #10 spot in the Central Region.
* Alexander Ekstrand has also added 22 wins with just five losses as he is ranked as the #8 singles player in NCAA Division III and the #3 singles player in the Central Region.
* Emil Grantcharov also enters the weekend ranked as the #16 singles player in NCAA Division III and the #4 singles player in the Central Region with a 16-8 record on the year.
* Both Ekstrand and Grantcharov were selected to compete in the NCAA Individual National Champioznhips in Claremont, California at the end of the month.
* In doubles play, Derek Hsieh has played lights out with a 25-8 record to lead the Maroons. Hsieh and Grantcharov are ranked as the #17 doubles team in NCAA Division III and the #6 team in the Central Region with a 12-5 record as a team.
* Andrei Leonov and Pat Otero have played well in doubles play this season and enter the weekend ranked as the #1 doubles team in NCAA Division III and the #1 doubles team in the Central Region with an 15-7 record as a tandem. The duo was selected to compete in the NCAA Doubles National Championships at the end of the month.
* With a win, UChicago will earn a spot in the NCAA Semifinals on Tuesday afternoon where they will take on the winner of #1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and #12 Babson.

#4 CASE WESTERN RESERVE NOTES:

* Case Western enters the NCAA Quarterfinals ranked as the #4 team in NCAA Division III with a 27-5 record on the season.
* The Spartans picked up wins over #56 Whitman and #13 Kenyon in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.
* Case Western won the UAA Tournament at the end of April with wins over #33 Brandeis, #5 Emory, and #4 UChicago.
* Casey Hishinuma leads the Spartans with 28 singles wins on the season and just 6 losses.
* Four Case Western Spartans are ranked in the top-50 of the ITA National Singles ranking including Ajay Mahenthiran (#11),  Ansh Shah (#27), George Kosseifi (#40), and Anmay Devaraj (#49).
* Leon Chen and Jon Totorica have teamed up to be the top doubles team for Case Western with a 17-4 record on the year.
* Devaraj and Hishinuma also enter the Championships ranked as the #13 doubles team with a 15-4 record as a duo.

SERIES HISTORY:

* The University of Chicago leads the all-time series 15-6 over the Gusties.
* The Maroons beat Gustavus Adolphus twicve earlier this season with a 5-2 in the opening round of ITA Indoor Nationals and a 6-1 win in a neutral site match at the University of Wisconsin.
* UChicago has won nine of the last ten matches between the two teams since 2019.
