ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The University of Chicago senior duo of
Andrei Leonov and
Pat Otero was named the UAA Men's Tennis Athletes of the Week for the first time of the season, as released by the University Athletic Association on Tuesday afternoon.
Leonov and Otero became the first players in men's tennis program history to win an Individual National Championship after winning the doubles crown on Monday afternoon.
The Maroons' doubles duo won all five of their matches with one in the team tournament and four en route to the doubles titles. The team won all five matches against top-15 teams in the country including a three-set thriller in the National Championship match against the #4 team from Tufts.
Leonov and Otero took down the #13 team from Case Western 6-3 in the team tournament. Then, they added wins of 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 over the #10 team from Gustavus Adolphus and 6-3, 6-3 over the #14 team from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. In the semifinals, they won another match in straight sets, 7-6(7-4), 6-2, over the #5 team from Swarthmore before taking down the #4 team from Tufts 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(7-5) in the finals.
This is the first time in their careers that either Otero and Leonov earned Athlete of the Week honors for the Maroons.
