Wrestling Places Six Student-Athletes on CSC Academic All-District Team

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago wrestling team placed six student-athletes on the CSC Academic All-District Team, as released by College Sports Communicators on Tuesday afternoon. The six student-athletes earning Academic All-District honors include Brendan Connolly, Sean Conway, Gunnar Garriques, Tyler Joseph, Hutch Lynott, and Cael Saxton.

Brendan Connolly was selected to the Academic All-District team with a 23-17 record on the season. The junior from Saddle River, New Jersey earned a second-place finish in the UAA Championships in the 149-pound weight class. He also earned an eighth-place finish in the Region V tournament with a 2-3 record and wins over Elmhurst and Manchester. On the season, Connolly earned 58 takedowns, 6 tech falls, 2 pins, and 1 major decision victory.

Sean Conway earned Academic All-District honors after he became the lone UChicago wrestler to earn All-American honors. He was the first UChicago student-athlete to qualify for the National Championship match since the 1992 season. The junior from Chicago, Illinois upset three of the top eight wrestlers in the nation on his run to the finals with wins over the #1 wrestler from Ohio Northern, the #3 wrestler from Olivet, and the #8 wrestler from Central (IA). Conway wraps up his season with a 44-13 record that included the UAA Championship, a 2nd-place finish in Region V, and a 2nd-place finish in the National Championships. He tallied 109 takedowns, 13 pins, 12 tech fall wins, and 6 major decision victories.

Gunnar Garriques earned an Academic All-District berth after becoming just one of three University of Chicago student-athletes to qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships in the 197-pound weight class. Garriques fell short in both of his matches in the NCAA Championships, after wrapping up a top-notch regular season with a 21-6 record overall. The junior from Lake Forest, Illinois won the UAA Championships to earn a spot on the All-UAA team, and he also added a 3rd-place finish in the NCAA Region V Championships with a 4-1 record on the weekend. He recorded 5 pins, 6 tech falls, 4 major decision victories, and 36 takedowns.

Tyler Joseph added his spot on the Academic All-District team after capping off the season with a 16-9 record overall and a 6th-place finish in the UAA Championships. The senior from Harrison, New York entered the Region V Tournament as the #3 overall seed in the 174-pound weight class, but he suffered an injury in the quarterfinals to end his shot at a National Championship berth. Joseph earned 5 tech fall wins, 1 major decision, 1 pin, and 33 takedowns on the season.

Hutch Lynott was named to the Academic All-District team after finishing the year with a 24-15 overall record during his junior season. Lynott earned a 5th-place finish in the 174-pound weight class at the UAA Championships this winter. The Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania native had his best performance of the season at the Al Hanke Invitational at Elmhurst with a 5-1 record on the weekend. Lynott earned 40 takedowns, 4 major decision victories, 3 pins, and a pair of tech fall victories.

Cael Saxton took his spot on the Academic All-District team with a 17-9 record during his junior season. The senior from Avon, Ohio brought home a third-place finish in the 149-pound weight class at the UAA Championships with a pair of wins over wrestlers from Case Western Reserve. He also won the 149-pound weight class at the Brown Terrell Dubuque Invitational. Saxton won five matches by major decision and four by tech fall, and he added 1 pin and 38 takedowns.

The wrestling team capped off their 2024-25 season with a 5-3 overall record in dual meets and their second consecutive 2nd-place finish in the UAA Championships. The team also placed 24th in the NCAA Division III National Championships with one All-American, three NCAA Championship qualifiers, and six All-Region honorees in the Region V Championships.

CSC Academic All-District Team honorees are chosen by the national organization based on combined academic and athletic accomplishments.  Nominees must have a GPA above 3.50 in at least the sophomore year, and they must have either played in 70% of the team scoring events or have competed in the UAA Championship meet. The 2025 Academic All-America team will be announced on Wednesday, July 9.
