ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- University of Chicago sophomore Shrikeshav Murugesan was named the University Athletic Association Player of the Week, as announced by the association office on Monday afternoon.
In his University of Chicago debut, Murugesan won the top flight of singles at the Everybody vs. Cancer Invitational at Toledo University this weekend. The sophomore went 3-0 in the top flight with a pair of wins over Division I foes.
The Edison, New Jersey and Penn State University transfer took down a player from the University of Toledo in a three-set thriller (4-6, 7-5, 10-8). Then, he took down Youngstown State University in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) before beating Holy Cross in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 11-9) to complete the undefeated weekend.
The Player of the Week award is the first of the career for Murugesan.
Murugesan and the rest of the men's tennis team will return to action this weekend as they travel to Kalamazoo, Michigan for the ITA Central Regional Tournament at Kalamazoo College from Friday to Monday.
