ADRIAN, Mich. - The #13 University of Chicago wrestling team competed in a challenging slate of matches at the Adrian Open on Saturday afternoon.
Keaton Mayernik had a dominant 4-1 day to help earn the best finish of the day for the Maroons. Mayernik started off quickly with a 16-1 tech fall win and a first-period pin in just 2:18 to reach the semifinals. After falling in the semis, he rolled through the consolation bracket with a pair of pins in just 37 seconds and 7 seconds, the fastest pin of the season for the Maroons, to bring home the third-place finish.
Sawyer Chism joined Mayernik with a third-place finish in the 197 weight class. In his opening match, Chism won one of the craziest matchers of the season with a 20-19 win by decision to reach the semifinals. After a loss in the semis, Chism moved to the consolation bracket where he brought home a pair of first-period pins to lock up the third-place finish.
Four other Maroons recorded placement finishes, highlighted by Miles Palmer, who went 3-3 on the day for a 6th-place finish. Zachary Parisi, Samuel Szerlip, and Logan Cofsky all recorded 7th-place finishes for UChicago to round out their day at the Adrian Open.Â
The Maroons return to the mat next Saturday, January 17, at the Al Hanke Invite hosted by Elmhurst.
