ELMHURST, Ill. -- The University of Chicago wrestling team brought home four weight class titles and 14 placement finishes on Saturday afternoon in Elmhurst to bring home the Al Hanke Invitational title.
Nicholas Cheshier picked up his first placement finish of the year as the sophomore was a perfect 5-0 on the weekend to win the 165-pound weight class. Cheshier took down his teammate 7-1 in the opening round before a third-period pin sent him into the quarterfinal round. He then won back-to-back matches with takedowns in overtime to reach the finals before earning a major decision victory in the championship match.
Sean Conway and
Maksim Mukhamedaliyev each continued their dominant seasons with a 4-0 weekend en route to winning the weight class title. Conway won his third tournament of the season, and Mukhamedaliyev remained perfect with his fifth tournament title in five appearances.
Nolan Pozzobon rounded out the tournament winners with just his second placement finish of the season. Pozzobon was dominant all tournament long, outscoring his opponents 29-4 in the three wins. He earned a tech fall in the opening round before picking up a pair of wins by decision, 3-0 over UW-Whitewater and 8-1 over Wheaton (IL).
The Maroons return to action next weekend with a trio of duals, their final duals until the UAA Championships. UChicago will take #7 North Central (IL) on Saturday afternoon in Naperville, and the team will then travel to North Manchester, Indiana for two duals against Marian-Ancilla and Manchester.
