NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The 12th-ranked University of Chicago wrestling team picked up a statement win on Saturday afternoon, knocking off #8 North Central (IL). The 24-14 win handed the Cardinals their first dual loss at home in nine years, dating back to 2017.
After the teams opened with a double forfeit at 125 pounds, North Central struck first in the match with back-to-back technical falls to build a 10-0 lead through three weight classes.
From that point on, it was all UChicago as the Maroons rattled off wins in six of the final seven contests, beginning with a dominant stretch through the middle of the lineup.
Maksim Mukhamedaliyev set the tone with a 9-0 major decision win over his opponent, followed by an 8-1 victory for
Dan Gunlogson at 157 and an 8-5 win by
Nicholas Cheshier to level the match at 10.
North Central briefly took the lead at 174 again when the Cardinals secured a major decision, but UChicago clawed back as
Jackson Davis delivered a 15-0 technical fall to take the first lead of the match at 15-14.
Gunnar Garriques followed with another technical fall to build the lead to six heading into the final bout. With the Cardinals needing a pin to tie the score,
Teddy Perry put the match in his own hands, sealing the dual with a 15-7 major decision win.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 9-4 on the season. The team will return to action on Sunday afternoon as they travel to North Manchester, Indiana for a pair of dual meets with Marian-Ancilla and Manchester.
