IM Rules: Basketball

Revised: Winter 2022


General

  • All teams and players are subject to IM Policies.  
  • In general, a combination of high school and college basketball rules will be used.
  • Only the team captain/manager should speak to officials regarding calls, questions, or clarifications.
  • All games will be played at Henry Crown Field House - Upper Level unless otherwise specified.
  • NO DUNKING at HCFH
  • All players must have their UChicago ID card for access to HCFH and swipe in at the front desk.
  • Only water is allowed inside HCFH.  NO FOOD, GUM, SPORT DRINKS, ETC.


Equipment

  • Team members must all wear the same color shirts
  • Proper footwear (sneakers, tennis shoes) is required.
  • Jewelry, baseball hats, or anything else deemed dangerous may not be worn.
  • The use of any hard protective equipment such as metal is prohibited.


Players & Substitutions

  • A team consists of five (5) players on the court at a time
    • Coed = At least two (2) female-identifying players on the court.
    • A team may start and play with as a few as four (4) players.
  • Substitutions may be made when an official has blown the ball dead.  Subs must wait for the official to signal them into the game.
  • Each team is responsible for providing a scorekeeper
    • The two scorers (one from each team) will be jointly responsible for the score – no score protests will be heard.


Roster Submission

  • Team managers/captains are responsible for inputting their rosters on IMLeagues. 
  • Players must be listed on the online/printed roster to play.
  • All players will check in with the IM Official or Supervisor prior to game time.
  • Roster additions are unlimited and can be made throughout the regular season. 
  • Rosters will lock at the conclusion of the regular season. 
  • Only players on the official online roster on IMLeagues will be permitted to compete in the playoffs


General Rules

  • Games consist of two 20-minute halves.
    • Due to extenuating circumstances, officials may need to adjust the length of the game.
    • A short halftime will be provided.  Teams switch sides after halftime.
  • Teams must be on the court by game time.
    • This means arriving early to stretch and check-in.
    • A 5-minute grace period will be given if needed.  After 5 minutes, a forfeit will be awarded.
      • As long as a team has the required minimum number of players, the game begins on time.
      • Teams that forfeit are subject to being removed from the league.
  • Scoring: 1 point (free throws), 2 points (normal basket), 3 points (behind the three-point line).
  • Running Clock except for:
    • The last two (2) minutes of the second half for violations, fouls, time-outs, etc. (DOES NOT stop for made field goals)
    • The last one (1) minute of an OT period for violations, fouls, time-outs etc. (does not stop for made field goals)
    • Any situations causing an extended delay in putting the ball into play (ball rolling downstairs, injury, etc.)
    • Time-outs
  • TIMEOUTS: Each team is allowed one 60-second timeout per half
    • There is no "carry over" of timeouts
    • A technical foul will be called for a team using a timeout that they do not have           
  • In the event of injury, an officials' timeout may be taken
  • After a stoppage of play (time-out, etc.), the game clock will be started when an official signals time-in
  • IM supervisors/officials have the authority to make decisions on any point not specifically covered in these rules
    • The Director of Intramurals should be advised of such decisions at the earliest opportunity


Live Ball/Dead Ball

  • The game (and any OT period) shall be started by a jump ball in the center circle.  All subsequent jump balls shall be awarded by alternating possession (by a throw-in).  The team that did not win the jump will take the ball out to begin the second half.
  • The ball becomes live when:
    • The ball leaves the official's hand (initial jump ball)
    • The ball touches, or is touched by, a player who is in bounds (throw-in)
    • The ball touches, or is touched by, a player off the rim (missed free throw)
  • The ball becomes dead (or remains dead) when:
    • Any goal is made
    • Held ball occurs or ball lodges on basket support
    • Official's whistle is blown
    • Time expires for a half or extra period
    • A foul or floor violation occurs


Fouls & Violations

  • Bonuses (1-and-1) starting on the 7th team foul of the half.  Double bonuses (2 shots) starting on the 10th team foul of the half.
    • Team fouls reset at the start of the second half and overtime
  • Technical Fouls will be charged to the offending player (or team) for any of the following:
    • Delay of game
    • Playing with more than 5 team members at any given time
    • Calling more than their allotment of timeouts
    • Any unsportsmanlike acts
    • Illegal substitution.
    • Failure to remain in the designated bench area
    • DUNKING at HCFH (including during warmups)
  • Technical fouls result in two shots and possession of the ball.  A technical foul counts as a team foul.
  • The following violations will be penalized in accordance with standard basketball rules:
    • Double-dribble/travel
    • Over-and-back (Backcourt)
    • 3-seconds in the lane (offensive players)
    • 10-seconds to advance the ball out of the backcourt
    • Goaltending/interference
    • Intentionally kick or strike the ball
    • Cause the ball to enter and pass through the basket from below the rim
  • IM supervisors/officials may penalize teams for rule violations before, during and after games – both on and off the court.
  • Teams are responsible for the actions/behavior of their players (including those on the bench) and fans.
    • Violations may result in a "bench" technical, individual, or team suspension
  • Each team shall designate one manager/captain for each game.  Only the manager should talk to an official about a call and only during a stoppage in play (i.e. timeout, halftime, etc.)
    • Rule interpretations, excluding judgment calls, may be discussed 
    • Violations of this will result in a technical foul


Free Throws

  • The fouled player shall attempt the free throw(s).
  • Any player of the offended team who is legally in the game may attempt a free throw awarded because of a technical foul.
  • The try must be made within 10 seconds after the ball has been given to the shooter.
  • Players in the lane can enter once the ball is released.  The shooter and everyone else not in the lane can't enter until the ball hits the rim.
  • In the event a free throw shooter is injured on a foul, another player who was on the court at the time of the foul may shoot for them


Overtime

  • If the score is tied at the end of the second half, one 5-minute OT period will be played
    • The clock will stop in the last minute of OT
    • One additional timeout per team, per OT period
  • Regular season games still tied at the end of the 5-minute overtime will be recorded as a tie. 
  • In playoff games, additional OT periods will be played as necessary (each five minutes in length).
  • Each overtime period will start with a jump ball.      


Tiebreakers – For playoff advancement and seeding, the following tiebreakers will be used as applicable:

  1. Winning Percentage
  2. Head-to-Head
  3. Points Against (Average per Game)
  4. Record vs. Common Opponents
  5. Record vs. Other Playoff Teams
  6. Coin Flip
