Intramural Policies: Leagues and Divisions

Leagues are designated as Men's, Women's or Coed. Coed leagues require a minimum number of women to participate.

Some leagues are specified as either Undergraduate or Graduate. If a league does not specify, it is open to both undergraduate and graduate teams who will play against each other.

Some undergraduate leagues offer Residence Hall and Independent Divisions. If a division does not specify, it is open to both residence hall and independent teams.

Residence Hall Division

The Residence Hall division is open to undergraduate students living in College Housing, or other University-approved College Houses provided they are not playing in the independent division.

If you start playing for one team, you are committed to playing for that team for the entire season of a particular sport regardless of any room, house or residence hall changes.

The undergraduate independent division is composed of teams and individuals living in quarters other than College Housing. Teams and individuals from the undergraduate residence division may participate in this division provided the undergraduate residence division of a particular sport is at capacity.

In a particular sport, an individual may participate on only one same gender and one coed team.

Residence hall teams compete throughout the year for points to determine a Maroon Cup Champion. Participants must be residents or associates of the residence hall which they are playing for.

Associate Members: A person must be listed as a resident or associate member of College Housing to participate for any house. Associate membership must be obtained each year.

Associate members of houses may only participate as associates if they do not live in College Housing or in a fraternity.

Resident Heads and Assistant Resident Heads may participate with their houses in any team activity.

Independent Division

The independent division is open to all qualified University of Chicago students who do not live in College Housing or choose to create a team outside of their residence hall.

Graduate

The graduate division is open to all individuals who are graduate students of the University. Post docs are also eligible for graduate leagues. Hospital residents and staff are not eligible for intramurals.

Graduating varsity athletes, who have used up their varsity eligibility, are permitted to participate in the graduate leagues of their varsity sport.
